4 Important Reasons Why You Should Avoid Mouthwashes Containing Alcohol

It used to be that practically every kind of mouthwash used alcohol to help rid the mouth of germs. However, this trend is now changing, and you should be able to find plenty of alcohol-free mouthwashes on the shelves of your local supermarket. Of course, you might not be sure exactly why you should use them instead of a product that contains alcohol.

Here are just four good reasons why.

1. Possible Association with Oral Cancers

One study reported in the Dental Journal of Australia linked alcohol-containing mouthwashes with an increased risk of oral cancer. This was thought to be due to the fact that it breaks down the lining of the mouth slightly, letting in substances that can cause cancer. It is important to note that experts are not yet in agreement as to whether oral cancers can be linked conclusively to the use of mouthwashes that contain alcohol, but there's really no good reason to take the risk when you can safeguard your oral health just as effectively using an alcohol-free alternative.

2. Dries Out the Mouth

Most people don't understand just how important saliva is for their oral health. Beyond helping to break down food, saliva contains compounds that help fight against bacteria and protect our teeth and gums. Unfortunately, alcohol dries out the mouth. This reduces the amount of saliva in your mouth, even after just a small dose. This is particularly problematic for people who already suffer from dry mouth, but everyone should be aware of the risk.

3. Irritates Cuts and Sores

One reason why people tend to like using mouthwashes that contain alcohol is that you get that slight burning sensation after you're done. This makes your mouth feel very fresh afterwards. However, that burning sensation can irritate any current problems. If there are any cuts or sores along your gums, they are going to be aggravated, and that will often mean that they won't heal as quickly.

4. Not Safe for Children

Mouthwashes that contain alcohol shouldn't be used by children. You probably already know this, but it's easy for a child to simply try your mouthwash when you aren't looking, especially since you should already have been teaching them about just how important it is to maintain strong oral health. Children can suffer from alcohol poisoning after swallowing even a small amount, so it's best to remove the risk entirely by only using alcohol-free mouthwash.
