There are many reasons why one may lose their teeth. Reasons include all types of accidents, diseases and age. Dentures help improve the quality of life for people who have lost all or part of their teeth. Dentures can

  • Help people chew and enjoy their food better. People can lose teeth that are important for chewing and have to resort to softer food, and this can severely affect their quality of life. Dentures can be easily used to chew solid food properly.
  • Give back people their confidence and self-esteem. When someone loses their permanent teeth for any reason, this can severely affect their ability to socialise and feel good about themselves. Often the first thing we notice in a face-to-face conversation is the person's teeth. Dentures can be put on or installed in such a way that no one can tell that these teeth are artificial.
  • Dentures can also help many people talk more clearly. Loss of certain teeth can affect a person's ability to pronounce words properly and speak clearly. This in turn can also affect people's confidence in their ability to talk to other people. With dentures, this ability to speak clearly is restored.

Types of dentures

Dentures can be partial, full or fixed. Partial dentures replace teeth lost on a particular arch. Full dentures replace all teeth inside of the mouth. Fixed dentures may also be known as bridges or crowns. These are installed by a qualified dentist when a tooth is partially damaged and they do not want to fully replace the tooth. Dentures may be made from a plastic or metal plate in which artificial teeth are attached.

Gums need time to heal

If you have lost teeth for any reason, then you should not expect to get these replaced with dentures in a small time frame. Normally when teeth are lost, this comes with an injury to the gums. Dentures cannot be place on gums that have not healed properly. This is why your dentist will tell you to wait a few months to give these gums ample time to heal. In the meantime, you will have multiple appointments with your doctor who will take several molds of your gums to ensure that the dentures will fit properly.

After you have been given dentures, it is important to look out for certain symptoms of discomfort. These symptoms indicate that the dentures are not fitting properly and you will need to revisit the dentist.
